The crematorium is the only one in Ireland that offers bereaved families the choice of three chapels in which they can have any type of service they wish.
Because of our three chapels and the level of service we offer, Mount Jerome receives the most cremation funerals of any crematorium in Ireland.
Above all, we are proud to assure you that we are committed to providing services and surroundings that bring peace and comfort to bereaved families and visitors, through a dignified and respectful atmosphere. Service is central to what we do. As a mark of respect, we are the only facility in Ireland where the gatemen wear morning suits and black top hats when they meet and escort funeral corteges.
There are two types of services, 20 minute committal services or 40-45 minute full services. Full services require the booking of two simultaneous chapel time slots. Services can be religious or not at all.
The Chapels
At Mount Jerome, we have 3 chapels for cremation services: the Victorian Chapel, the Garden Chapel and the Angels Chapel. All 3 are used for all types of services and denominations.
All our 3 chapels have full sound piped systems that can play music from various sources and also have large digital screens that can be made available to show digital photographs and videos during a service.
All 3 have similar lighting and curtain closure systems, are all carpeted and have modern heating systems. Please note there is an electronic organ available in the Victorian Chapel and an electronic piano in the Garden Chapel.
Victorian Chapel
Built in 1847 it has a classical Victorian design. It is a traditional chapel with ornate features such as a high vaulted wooden ceiling and numerous plaques and tablets erected on the inner walls. It is located at the top of the main avenue of Mount Jerome, 170 metres from the main gates. Please note there is an electronic organ available in the Victorian Chapel.
Garden Chapel
Opened in 2003 and has a more modern and simpler design than the Victorian Chapel. It caters for more intimate services and the increasing popularity of non denominational services. It is located adjacent to the garden (lawn) section of the cemetery, 240 metres from the main gates. Please note there is an electronic piano available in the Garden Chapel.
Angels Chapel
Opened in 2014 it is a unique setting for families to hold services for babies and young infants. It is the only chapel of its kind in Ireland today. This chapel can also be used for adult services. It is located adjacent to our Garden Chapel.
Please be aware of the potential size of family and friends attending the Angels Chapel. If you feel that the Angels Chapel will not be big enough for your audience, then perhaps our Garden Chapel may be a more suitable choice, as it has a far bigger capacity.
Service Types
At Mount Jerome you can have any kind of service in whichever of our three chapels which you think is appropriate to your circumstances. Generally though services tend to fall into 3 main types.
- Non service funerals:
These are funerals that have no service at the crematorium. They in effect bypass our chapels. The coffin is brought straight to the cremator building for cremation. These funerals account for about 10% of funerals received at Mount Jerome for cremation. - Committal service funerals:
These funerals have a prior full mass/service at a parish church before they arrive at Mount Jerome. Committal services are about 15 minutes in duration, are usually conducted by a member of the clergy and follow a standard religious format. These services account for 70% of the funerals received at Mount Jerome for cremation.
Committal service funerals are received throughout the day, 08.30-16.00, Monday – Saturday. However the vast majority of committal services arrive at Mount Jerome between the hours of 11.00 and 13.30. This is because most Dublin parish churches have their funeral masses / services between the hours of 10.00-12.00. - Full service funerals:
These funerals do not have a prior mass / service at a parish church before they arrive at the crematorium. The main service takes place at Mount Jerome and are about 40 minutes in duration. Therefore two simultaneous time slots are normally booked.= to allow enough time for the service to be conducted and for mourners to disperse when they mingle after the service.
All our 3 Chapels have large Digital Screens positioned directly above the coffin, which can show a digital picture or video during a service.
Our Environmental Credentials
In 2011 Mount Jerome became the first crematorium in Ireland to install a filtration system to capture pollutants generated by the cremation process.
Effectively what this means is that all our emissions are “scrubbed” to ensure any harmful emissions are removed and that we comply with the latest EU environmental legislation.
The crematorium equipment at Mount Jerome far surpasses any historical cremator equipment currently in use in Ireland. We are the most environmentally friendly crematorium in Ireland today.
Marking their Passing
Because the cemetery was established in the early Victorian period, it has the greatest concentration of Victorian funerary art in Ireland. It also has the second highest number of burials of any cemetery in Ireland.
Most Dublin families on the south side of the city have loved ones buried here and have visited us on many occasions We currently have graves for sale and re-open existing family graves for further full internments and for cremation ashes. Please note that we do not pre-sell graves in advance.
