In Loving Memory

Eulogy
Today we gather to lay Joan gently to rest, with those she loved so dearly before her — her precious baby Janette, taken far too soon at just nine days old, her beloved sister Ann, and her dear mum Lily. Together again, held in peace, remembered in love. Joan was many things to many people — a beloved mother, a treasured sister, a much-loved aunty, a cherished nanna, whose greatest joy in later years was the laughter of grandchildren. She loved them close beside her, sitting proudly on her knee, or filling the room with noise and mischief, bringing life and chaos to the place she spent her final months. Those last years were not easy. She suffered greatly, yet fought with strength and determination to remain in the home she loved. When the time came that she needed more care, she returned to the home where she had made friends, and where kindness surrounded her. There, in the end, she chose to be. And there, she was not let down. Joan loved family gatherings — the simple joy of everyone together. She joined in the fun, the fancy dress, the Christmas jumpers, always ready for laughter, always part of the moment. She worked hard all her life for her family, kept a beautiful home, and welcomed all who crossed its door. No one left unfed, unloved, or unnoticed. She travelled far and wide with her brothers and sisters, coach trips across the country, and adventures to America — to Nashville, Texas, to visit family, and to make memories that stayed with her always. She was a wonderful cook, sharing warmth through every meal, with hands that gave comfort as much as they prepared food. Today we say goodbye with sadness, but also with gratitude. For Joan’s love, her strength, her humour, her generosity, and the family she held together so well. Rest now, Joan. Your work is done. Your pain is over. Your place in our hearts is forever. And every time we gather, laugh, cook, travel, or love one another, we will find you there.
