Eulogy
John was many things to many people — John, Dad, Speedy, Pops — but to everyone who knew him, he was the man most likely to have a smile on his face, and asking what he could get you to drink.
A dentist by profession, John trained in London, met the love of his life at medical school in 1961, and built a life and practice in Beaconsfield where he raised three children. He was a rugby man — playing, coaching, and cheering for the Irish loudly through every Six Nations. He windsurfed, attempted skiing with legendary results, renovated a French farmhouse and cooked a mean BBQ.
His greatest loves were good food, chilled Sancerre, the French sunshine, pets and his grandchildren — Aimee, Zoe, Olly and Evelyn — whom he spoilt enthusiastically and swore to secrecy about contraband sweets.
He was a giver of hugs, a wearer of his heart on his sleeve, and he always signed off with the same words: "love you always."
In his later years, he moved to Bristol, switched from wine to cider in true West Country fashion, cooked for the homeless, and became a ferry shareholder. He never stopped living fully.
Dad didn't want to get old. He wanted to go with a bang and have a wake that was a jolly good knees-up.
We hope he got both.
Beloved brother, father, and Pops. Missed every single day. always
